I personally designed this course last year, drawing on my 25 years working for the Recreation Department , my co-owners (Alicia and Adelka), and my experience of my highschool daughters learning and growing from their coffee/barista experience. Last summers institutes were incredibly successful and a whole lot of fun!
I have tried to design the institutes so that although the focus is on learning how to be a barista, the highschoolers learn many skills that are transferable to many job settings. (Such as learning how to use a cash register/make change, customer service, food handling, multi tasking and time management).
Two of the graduates from the institutes last summer have been volunteering at the shop during the year to increase their skills and were recently hired….receiving their FIRST paychecks! Many of the students have dropped in to the shop over the year to say hello and seem to have fond and fun memories of their experience last summer. Always great to see them.
